What you need to use the online identification function

Online ID card and PIN

When you pick up your national identity card or your electronic residence permit, you decide whether you want to activate or deactivate the online identification function. If you have deactivated the online identification function, you can have it activated again at any time.

You have to select a six-digit personal identification number (PIN) that you have to enter each time you want to identify yourself online to allow your personal data to be transmitted over an encrypted connection. This ensures that data will never be transmitted without your knowledge and confirmation.

Software

The software establishes a secure connection between your card reader, your ID card, and the service provider. This software provides for an encrypted data exchange between the ID card and the service provider.

We recommend you to install the current version of AusweisApp2, which is available for download here.

Card reader / Android device for direct connection via NFC

You need a card reader in order to read out the data stored on your national identity card or electronic residence permit, so that it can be transmitted to the provider whose online service you want to use.

The card readers suitable for the online identification function have been tested and certified by the Federal Office for Information Security.

Also suitable Android devices can be used for the online identification function. You will find a list of supported devices here.

Did you test a card reader or mobile device that works even though it is not listed here? Please send us an e-mail to let us know.

Supported Android devices
