Unblock ID card PIN using the PUK

If you have entered your ID card PIN wrong three times in a row, the ID card PIN is blocked. You can unblock it in the PIN management.

  1. Enter the PIN-Management section.

  2. Insert your card if it is not already inserted.

  3. Enter your ten-digit unblocking number (PUK). You can find it in the letter you received from the issuing authority of your identity card (see PIN letter of Bundesdruckerei).

  4. Confirm the dialog after you have entered the PUK.

PUK counter

Please note that the PUK features a counter. You can use your PUK 10 times. After that, you have to contact the authority responsible for issuing your identification document to generate a new PIN, hence unblocking your ID card.

The successful entry of your PUK is displayed in a dialog text, see next figure.

After unblocking your identity card you have three new tries to enter the correct PIN. If you have forgotten the PIN please contact the authority responsible for issuing your identity card to set a new PIN.
